Program Description

The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (MA SMP) Program is a statewide, federally funded grant education program that empowers seniors and their caregivers to be engaged healthcare consumers with an emphasis on raising consumer awareness of deceptive marketing tactics by reviewing and questioning medical billing and the quality of health care consumers are receiving.

The MA SMP Program also helps beneficiaries, their caregivers and support networks in navigating the complex web of Medicare and provides valuable statewide resources including Medicare health benefits information (SHINE-Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone on Medicare) and other cross-referrals.

Along with free community educational workshops, we also staff SMP information tables at health fairs, professional conferences, TRIAD/law enforcement community events, county fairs and cultural gatherings. The MA SMP Program participates in professional conferences as workshop speakers and also offers professional training forums as requested for nursing and social worker continuing educational units (CEUs).

We provide free SMP Personal Health Care Journals (health diaries), brochures and other SMP materials to aid the consumer in tracking their health care and billing. If beneficiaries have medical billing or quality of care concerns, we work with them to reach a resolution. We facilitate SMP education sessions at senior centers, spiritual centers, schools, businesses, health care settings, conferences, community-based organizations, civic groups and elder, assisted living and public housing facilities.

If someone would like to assist the MA SMP Program in disseminating the SMP Program message: Preventing, detecting and reporting healthcare errors, fraud and abuse, we offer free SMP Volunteer Foundations Training with all necessary training materials provided.
