Board of Selectmen

Summary of Responsibilities 
Welcome!  The Board of Selectmen oversee matters affecting the community’s interest and welfare.  The Board establishes policies, enacts rules and regulations governed by the specific powers and responsibilities set forth in the Town’s Charter, by-law, or by statute.  Please see the Town's Charter for more information. The Board is comprised of five members each with three-year terms. The Board will:

- Appoint the Town Manager
- Appoint Town Counsel
- Call Town Elections, Town Meeting Dates, Special Town Meeting Dates
- Create Board Policies
- Act as Water & Sewer Commissioners
- Act as Road Commissioners
- Appoint Board/Committee Members 
- Approve Pole Hearings
- Authorize Town Manager to negotiate Marijuana Host Community
         Agreements and any other Agreement
- Participate in Annual Town Meetings
- Prepare Board of Selectmen Annual Report
- Develop Town Meeting Warrants
- Produce Annual Town Report
- Chapter 61, 61A, & 61B Land Right of First Refusal
- Local Initiative Program (LIP) sale/refinance Right of First Refusal
- Present Commendations, Proclamations, Special Recognition Awards
- The Board may make investigations and may authorize the
         Town Manager to investigate the affairs of the Town and the
         conduct of any town agency. 
- Act as Local Licensing Authority issuing licenses and
         permits which include, but not limited to:

  • Alcohol & One Day Alcohol
  • Automatic Amusement Devices
  • Automobile Dealers Class I-III
  • Common Victualler (Restaurants)
  • Innholders
  • Live Entertainment
  • Precious Metals/Pawnbrokers 
  • Storage of Flammable and Combustible Liquids, Flammable Solids or Flammable Gases

Selectmen Meetings
The Board typically meets at 6:30 p.m. the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month in the Board of Selectmen Meeting Room at Town Hall.  All meetings are open to the public.  A copy of the yearly schedule can be found here.  The meetings are broadcast live on Cable TV Channel 191 (Spectrum), or you can view the live meeting from Uxbridge Community Television (UCTV Live Streaming) Government Channel, or via Zoom. Selectmen Agendas
Agendas will be posted at least 48 hours prior to the meeting.  Upcoming and prior agendas can be found here. Anyone who would like to appear on an agenda at a future meeting, may contact the Town Manager at (508) 278-8600, Ext. 7 or ssette@uxbridge-ma.gov to discuss an agenda item.  

Citizen Comments
Citizens who wish to speak about a concern that is not part of the agenda, may do so under “Citizens’ Forum”. Citizens wishing to comment during a Public Hearing would do so during the Public Hearing when the Chair asks for public comments.  If you are attending in person, make your way to the podium either during Citizens’ Forum or during the Public Hearing comments.  If you are using Zoom, click “Raise Hand” on the bottom of your screen and wait to be recognized by the Chair, or if you are watching from Uxbridge Cable Access TV Channel 191, you may call into the meeting at (646) 558-8656, Meeting ID and Passcode can be found on the agenda; agendas can be found here.  When you wish to speak, Dial *9 to raise your hand and wait to be recognized by the Chair. Please note that part of your phone number will be visible to those viewing the meeting.
Prior to speaking, state your name and address. Public comment will be limited to 3 minutes per person.

Town Meetings 
Meetings are held in May and October. Details of the meeting, when available, can be found here.  All submissions of articles and petitions for Town Meetings are handled through the Selectmen’s office. The Board of Selectmen may call a Special Town Meeting anytime throughout the year.

Administrative staff in the office serve as liaisons between the public and the Board of Selectmen, handle all telephone calls, visitors and correspondence directed to the office, maintain all records of Board of Selectmen meetings, and prepare Board packages. The office staff processes all licensing, schedules public hearings, prepares warrants for annual and special Town Meetings, coordinates the Town’s Annual Report, maintains records of committee and board appointments and resignations, and maintains the Selectmen’s page on the Town’s website.
