BOH Summary of Responsibilities

Pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, and also both state and local regulations, the Uxbridge Board of Health is responsible for disease prevention and control, health and environmental protection, and promoting a healthy community.

The Board serves as the local arm of both the Mass. Department of Public Health and the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection. As such, its general duties include:

  • Developing, implementing and enforcing health policies
  • Overseeing inspections to maintain minimum standards for sanitation in housing and food service, and
  • Assuring that the basic health needs of the community are being met.
Specific responsibilities and areas of oversight:
 
  • Septic systems
  • Wells
  • Water quality
  • Public pools
  • Public beaches
  • Day camps
  • Food establishments
  • Housing inspections
  • Lead inspections
  • Waste Hauling
Infectious disease reporting & surveillance, including:
 
  • Rabies surveillance
  • Rabies specimen collection
  • Pandemic response planning
  • Health emergency response planning
  • Health education
The Board grants the following permits:
 
  • Food Establishment Permit
  • Body Art Establishment Permit 
  • Body Art Practitioner Permit
  • Percolation/Deep Hole Test
  • Keeping of Animal Permit
  • Tobacco Permit
  • Well Permit
  • Sand Blasting Permit (Abrasive Blasting)
  • Tanning Establishments
  • Motel/Trailer Establishment
  • Septic Haulers
  • Septic Installers
  • Trash Haulers
  • Reflexology

Please note: Massage therapy permits, previously issued by the town, are now issued through the state.
